Tough Questions Evil and Suffering

The Number One Question About God.

AGNOSTIC FIELD DAY

World Religions and Culture have an answer – Western Secular philosophers do not

If God allows evil and suffering to continue because He can’t stop it, He might be good, but not all powerful.

If God allows evil and suffering to continue and he could stop it but doesn’t, he might be all powerful but is not good.

The four scenes of God’s Story

Scene 1 – Creation – Genesis 1

Scene 2 – Fall – Genesis 3

Scene 3 – Redemption

Scene 4 – Glory

John 16:33 “In this world, you will have trouble”

33 “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”

1 Corinthians 13:12

  1. God is not the creator of evil and suffering

Genesis 1:31 – It was good

           Love is the number one value of the Bible –It demands Free Will

  1. God can bring about good –

Romans 8:28h

Genesis 50:20

  1. The day is coming when suffering will cease and God will judge evil

2 Peter 3:9

  1. Our suffering will pale in comparison to what God has in store for his followers

17 “For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

2 Corinthians 4:17

18 “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

Romans 8:18

9 “But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—

1 Corinthians 2:9

The issue in suffering is not explanation, but incarnation.

  1. We decide to make things bitter or turn to God for peace and courage

33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

“Faith is believing in advance what will only make sense in review.”

Philipp Yancey

1 Peter 1:6,7

1 “But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.”

Isaiah 43:1
