Greek theater – to wear a mask or to hide behind a mask
HYPOCRISY – The gap between:
- what we show and who we are.
- What we say and what we live.
- What we profess and what we practice.
“The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world finds unbelievable.”
“Good people will do good things, bad people will do bad things, but for good people to do bad things- that takes religion.”
ANSWERING THE OBJECTION OF THOSE OUTSIDE THE CHURCH– “There are too many hypocrites in churches” “Churches are full of hypocrites”
This is how I would answer the objectors:
- I would Agree with them.
- I would tell them Jesus agreed–sharpest words were to hypocrites
- Then I would Explain three things.
The premise of Christianity is based on sin.
“We have all sinned”
- The church is a place for imperfect people
- I would ask them to assess Christianity on the basis of the teachings and life of Jesus.
“Attack me rather than the path I follow and which I point out to anyone who asks me where I think it lies. If I know the way home and am walking along it drunkenly, is it any less the right way because I am staggering from side to side?”
WORDS TO THOSE INSIDE THE CHURCH
CONSISTENT TEACHINGS ABOUT HYPOCRISY
16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.
20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”
1 John 4:20
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
2 Timothy 3:1
JESUS TAUGHT ABOUT HYPOCRISY
1 Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
1 Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
Matthew 7: 1
6 This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me.
46 Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
JESUS MOST SCATHING TEACHINGS
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?
HOW DO WE DEAL WITH HYPOCRISY
DROP THE MASK
The Pharisees always wanted to look good on the outside.
Social Media is the breeding ground for hypocrisy.
- “I really enjoy all your religious post on facebook! Ever consider modifying your behavior to match them?”
- “Here’s a thought… maybe you wouldn’t have to mention you are Christian all the time, if you just acted like one most of the times.”
13 Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.
LIVE IN A COMMUNITY OF GRACE
1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
LET CHRIST FILL THE GAP
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
