Corinthians and Idols

Idolatry – anything that takes God’s rightful place.

“What is an idol? It is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give you”.    Tim Keller

Idolatry is a substitute

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry

1 Corinthians 10:14

He takes an Old Testament Story to warn them of their idolatry.  The story is Israel traveling through the wilderness to get to their promised land.

1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3  and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5  Nevertheless, with most of them, God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

  • He gave them a cloud for shade and guidance
  • He gave them water to drink
  • He gave them Food – Manna and Quail

He gave them everything they needed.  But they complained and God got ticked and they v. 5.

6 Now, these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”

Exodus 32:1-6 &28– Moses, Aaron, the Golden Calf

Let’s worship it.  They forgot about what God had done for them and exchanged their worship for an idol

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Romans 1:21

THIS IS IDOLATRY– God has done everything for us.  He loved us. Proved it on a cross. Everything we have is from God… a great gift.. but we hear a lie and believe it is better. Looks better at the moment and we exchange the truth for a lie. We exchange what is ultimate for something lesser.

God has designed a plan for our lives. He designed life to work a certain way.  Loving Him. Putting him first. Then goes on In Eph 5,6 and orders wife, children, job ministry..When things in order then life works much better.  In fact, it works well. It looks like this.

But when we take things that are good and we turn them into the ultimate and the order gets messed.. When it does there is disorder in life.

Eventually, what we thought was going to be good and found out later that it is not. Job….

ILLUS.  Kids.  “I don’t know you Dad.  You loved your job more than me

Again.. good things can become Bad.

When your job is first.. then you are not a good husband, father

“The essence of sin is disordered love. Loving anything more than God.”

Saint Augustine

In my opinion, this is one of the most profound and insightful statements ever made by a human. We often think of sin as those things that are dirty and ugly and really, really bad. Augustine gives us a different perspective. He tells us that we make idols out of good things when we make them ultimate things. This is disordered love. Money, power, career, spouses, children, social causes – all good things but we must be careful to keep them in their proper order of love. When our love of career exceeds the love of family we have a disordered love. When our love for family exceeds our love for God we have a disordered love. The Corinthians had every gift, they lacked nothing. They were richly blessed by God. Do you know what happened? They substitute an idol for a relationship

Colossians 3:5 (ESV)Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Put any sin there… underneath that is idolatry.

The shirt below the shirt. We all agree Lying is sin, stealing, cheating on your spouse, getting drunk, etc. but I present to you that below that sin is the real sin.. idolatry.

Lying..- fudge the truth.. exaggerate. Why?   because we want to save face. Look good… that is more important that obeying God .. telling the truth and Loving Jesus

Stealing..sin… Why? You thought at that moment that thing was more important than Jesus.. something you want because you thought that was more secure than Jesus.

So in a sense, we sin twice… the sin and then the idolatry below the sin…

What is your DREAM? What do you love?  No what is your NIGHTMARE?

“A counterfeit god is anything so central and essential to your life that, should you lose it, you feel hardly worth living.”   Tim Keller

How do you know if you’ve turned something into an idol? Ask yourself this: Would I think life is no longer worth living if I didn’t have it? Idols are functional saviors attempting to replace the real Savior Jesus Christ. They will always let us down, Jesus never will.

  1. You should have no other gods before me.
  2. You shall not make yourself any images –Idols

Then the other 8 all point back to them.

God wants nothing to replace Him.. the counterfeit God always lets you down.

8 We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9 We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.

12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.

13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.

No one is above idols. All of us have idols.. So if you walked in here

Moment of Honesty.. the good things can become idols… PREACHING

I CAN ELEVATE IT ABOVE GOD.  I want you to think highly of me… want to impress you…My temptation is wanting you to leave here thinking he is pretty good.. great sermon rather than leaving here thinking how Great Jesus was.

The human heart is an idol factory… we create idols within our heart constantly

LURE- it is enticing – bait

Romans 12:2  “Do not be conformed (molded-pressured) to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

13b God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

God has provided His Word, The Cross, Holy Spirit, Other Christians.

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.

He said  Flee Not Flirt

(NLT) 14 So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols. 15 You are reasonable people. Decide for yourselves if what I am saying is true.

Decide for yourselves.
