BAPTISM

We are very excited you’re considering baptism! Here are a few things to consider…

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

Baptism is a symbol that you have decided to follow Jesus and you belong to him and his church. It is a symbol that our sins are washed away, our shame is dead and buried, and we are raised to new life in Christ.
Baptism does not save us from our sins, it represents that Christ saved us from our sins, through his death on the cross and resurrection from the dead. The Bible teaches that no act, including baptism, could save us; but we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone.

IF BAPTISM DOESN’T SAVE US, WHY DO WE DO BAPTISMS?

Baptism is an act of obedience. We are commanded by God in the Bible to be baptized, therefore we choose to be baptized. We also choose to be baptized because Jesus himself was baptized, and we’re told to imitate Jesus with our lives.
When we are baptized, it brings incredible joy, not just to us, but to our church family. Thatโ€™s why we clap and cheer, because a public profession of faith in Jesus is so exciting. And hearing and seeing a story of redemption through Christ brings joy to the church family, and glory to Christ.
Baptism is also a recognition of accountability – in a good way. When you’re baptized, you’re publicly saying, “I’m a follower of Jesus,” and that comes with some accountability – not to be perfect, but to be pursuing a deeper walk with Christ.

WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?

At Fusion, we baptize people who have made a personal decision to follow Jesus. If that’s you, and you haven’t been baptized, we want to get you dunked!
Sometimes people will ask, “If I was baptized as an infant, can I be ‘re-baptized’ at Fusion? The answer to that is yes. Because as an infant, you didn’t decide to follow Jesus and be baptized yourself. Your parents intended to honor you and honor the Lord with your infant baptism, but we’d love to see you step out in faith and make that decision for yourself.
People will also ask, “If I was baptized, then I walked away from God, but now I want to be serious about my relationship with Him again, can I be ‘re-baptized’ at Fusion?” The reality is that all of us, at various times in our journey, feel closer to and further away from God. That’s ok. But the goodness of God is that He never leaves us! So, if you were baptized as a believer in Christ, that one baptism was your step of obedience – your next step isn’t to be baptized again, it’s to lean into where you are in your journey with Christ right now.

HOW DOES FUSION BIBLE CHURCH DO BAPTISM?

We do baptism by immersion, meaning at Fusion you get dunked under the water. We do baptism this way because the word “baptism” in the Bible means ‘to be immersed’, and because it seems to be the historical model of the early church.
So, do you think you’re ready to be baptized? Remember that the grace of God is really big. Meaning, you don’t have to be perfect to be baptized. In fact, you can’t be! Because no one is perfect. Baptism is for people who are ready to surrender to Jesus, and declare to their church family and others, “I belong to Jesus.”
If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ for this life and the next – meaning, if you believe that Jesus died on a cross for your sins and rose from the grave 3 days later – then we’d love to celebrate with you, and see you be obedient to Christ’s command to be baptized.
